Extra Curricular Activities

Speech and Drama

Speech and Drama lessons are offered on an extra-curricular basis at lunchtime (Y1-Y5) and after school (Y6). These classes help to develop a child’s communication skills and to teach them how to speak clearly and expressively. They are ideal for those interested in performing and invaluable to those who are less vocally confident.

Children are given the opportunity to sit LAMDA exams and to take part in a showcase for parents at the end of the year.

Acoustic Guitar Tuition

Guitar tuition covers acoustic finger-style guitar, rhythm, timing and standard music notation, a skill which can be applied to all instruments. Introduction of chords, simple to intermediate solo tunes, covering a variety of music genres, with unique arrangements of additional material by the tutors themselves. Understanding of cord symbols and tablature is also covered. A tuition book is required to be purchased, this will be advised. The basics are covered in the tuition book, taking approximately 2 years, with extra material of my own.  I enter pupils for the recognised LCM (RGT) Acoustic Graded Exams if one wishes to undertake them.

The acoustic finger-style/classical guitar, covers a broad spectrum of guitar styles, once the pupil has acquired a knowledge of music reading. Pupils are encouraged to take their guitar home following the lesson and practise between lessons, in order to make reasonable progress, say, at least 10 minutes a day.

These lessons take place during lunch-time and start from Y2 onwards.  Please contact the school office if you would like to add your child's name to the waiting list.

The preferred instrument is an acoustic nylon-strung, Spanish-style/classical instrument, 3/4 size guitar, which needs to be purchased either new or the tutors may have one to sell  which will last through the child’s junior years. A natural wood instrument is easy to sell on if needed, sorry, there are not guitars available to loan. The outlay for such an instrument can be as little for a new instrument £35 and £70, unless you could acquire a reasonable second-hand instrument, at considerably less, but buy only with knowledgeable advice. We do not teach electric or pop/rock/electric guitar, though, the fundaments of music, score reading is the same, so would advise you try another source, if the above does not suit.

For further discussion/advice on purchasing a suitable instrument it might be best to call the tutors (Mr & Mrs Robinson)  on  0121 354 4234.

Piano - Mrs Hall

I teach piano at The Shrubbery School on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes.  I currently have 16 pupils at school, ranging from Year 2 to Year 6.

As children progress, I prepare them to take examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

In addition, I encourage pupils to compete in the annual Tamworth Music Festival each spring and to perform in regular charity events.

Please refer to the School Fees for the pricing of extra-curricular lessons.

It is advisable to place your child's name on the waiting list as soon as possible.

Please contact the school office if you wish to do so to avoid disappointment.
