Pre-School Reception - A welcome start

Our Reception Class is for children aged four to four and a half. At The Shrubbery School, we recognise that many children are ready to begin a more formal education at an early age. Our reception class aims to help children with the important foundation skills.

We reinforce letter sounds acquired in Nursery and begin helping children with word recognition in preparation for reading. Correct pencil control and letter formation is encouraged.

Using a variety of practical activities, language, games, writing and songs the children work towards an understanding of number. The importance of the child as an individual is never lost at The Shrubbery and children can progress at their own pace.

The excitement of learning is promoted, creating an ethos which follows children throughout their Shrubbery career and beyond.

There is still time for imaginative and constructive play in the busy timetable of the Reception Class and children retain close links with their nursery friends next door, joining them for free choice activities once a week. Creativity through art, craft, music and role play is encouraged. All Reception children enjoy aquiring early information and technology skills through one to one tuition, the use of a computer as a free choice activity and interactive whiteboard.
