... the longest established fully co-educational private school for three to eleven year olds in the area
Within this department for children aged seven to eleven years old, the individual progress of each child remains of paramount importance. The curriculum is studied in more depth using the best of modern and traditional teaching methods.
Great attention is given to strengthening the basic foundations in English and Mathematics. By using a variety of colourful resources and practical material we aim to develop a sound understanding of number and mathematical concepts. Likewise in English, with careful attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar, children are helped to acquire skills to enable them to write in a variety of styles.
In the Junior School we begin a programme of thinking skills which helps to develop logic and can help prepare pupils for selective examinations later.
In subjects such as Science, History and Geography children are encouraged to develop a questioning approach to their work through a variety of written and practical tasks.
All around the school are colourful displays of children's art and craft work and practical and creative talents are nurtured.
Music and Drama are essential features of Junior School life allowing children to express themselves and learn to work together.
Specialist staff are available to teach PE and Games, Music, French and ICT to our Junior pupils. The small classes are often split further to enable children to receive the attention they deserve.
In their final year at The Shrubbery, older pupils are given positions of responsibility and are taught to be more self-reliant. Pupils vote for their own House Captains and enjoy the academic and sporting competitions between the three houses.
The Shrubbery School is proud of its record of academic success. Many pupils secure places at selective schools and all children leave us knowing that hard work and enthusiasm is the key to achievement
"We are committed to providing a happy and caring environment in which all children are encouraged to reach their full potential".
